Athlete Portrait: St. Louis Cardinals Catcher Yadier Molina

Earlier during this past baseball season, my family and I were lucky enough to sit close to the field at a Cardinals game.  Unfortunately it went horribly and San Francisco crushed my redbirds (let's just say it got so desperate that I was able to see Daniel Descalso pitch, a position player for those who aren't fans of the Cards), but I did snag some decent photos from my seat in the crowd.  Which brings me to a drawing I always wanted to do, my favorite baseball player, Yadier Molina.

Materials Used:

Original Sketch:

  • Strathmore Recycled Sketch Paper - Fine Tooth Surface
  • Lead Holders w/ 2H lead and HB lead

Final Drawing:

  • Wacom intuos 5 Touch Professional Pen Tablet
  • Corel Painter 8
  • Pens - Flat Color (for outline and base colors)
  • Airbrushes - Soft Airbrush 20 (for highlights and shadows)
  • Digital Water Color - Flat Water Blender (for background)

Time Spent: 30 hours and 41 minutes

Steps:

Prints for Sale: Follow the link by clicking here to my Etsy shop, where you can buy both the lighter and darker variation of this drawing.  Be sure to tell me which version you want in the section provided!

Up Next: I'm having some fun with my tablet, taking some time away from my colored pencils (will be back to them soon enough, don't worry), so I think I am going to draw another Cardinals player.  But which one will it be!?

Until next time! Lauren H.
