Athlete Portrait: St. Louis Cardinals' 2nd Baseman Kolten Wong

Kolten Wong

Other than a faint memory of loving Ray Lankford, Molina has been my favorite Cardinals player for as long as I can remember having one. He has yet to be challenged, and I doubt he will ever be dethroned in my eyes. That said, after years of 4 or 5 players battling it out for that runner up spot, Wong has made his way to the top. He's great with a bat, sure, but I'm a sucker for people who show a lot of strength defensively.

Materials Used:

Original Sketch:

  • Strathmore Recycled Sketch Paper – Fine Tooth Surface
  • Lead Holders w/ 2H lead and HB lead

Final Drawing:

  • Wacom intuos 5 Touch Professional Pen Tablet
  • Corel Painter 8
  • Pens – Flat Color (for initial black outline and base colors)
  • Airbrushes – Soft Airbrush 20 (for highlights and shadows, details, final outline, etc.)
  • Digital Water Color – Flat Water Blender (for background)

Time Spent: It either took 19 hours and 27 minutes, or 15 hours and 53 minutes... I may or may not have written one work time down twice, which is most likely.  So let's go with the latter time since Waino took 14.5 hours and Holliday took 16 hours.

Up Next: I still have reference photos of Matt Carpenter and Jason Heyward to work with, and the boyfriend is demanding I go with his favorite player first. So Carpenter it is! I'm going to have to get back to drawing a dog before I get to Heyward if a pending event pans out, but I swear I will get to him as soon as I can!

Until next time! Lauren H.
