Pet Portrait: Maggie the Border Collie

Meet Maggie the Border Collie and her favorite rubber toy, name unknown. Always appreciate when I get to draw a dog who smiles for the camera :)

Original Photo: Speaking of things I appreciate: there is nothing better than getting a high quality reference photo to work from. The only thing I changed for Maggie was lightening up her right side slightly so the contrast of light and shadow wasn’t so severe.

Background Options: I messed around with possible background options that worked in the rug Maggie was laying on to fill in the empty space somewhat, but eventually just decided that sometimes simple cast shadows are enough.

Time-Lapse Video: (Coming Soon!)

Time Spent: 50 hour and 7 minutes

Up Next: Right now I am figuring out the layout for my next portrait, a massive piece of 6 golden retrievers coming in at 24x30”. It’ll be my largest portrait yet, so wish me luck!

Until next time!
